Labor Day weekend in Northern California. The US Forest Service rents out retired fire lookout towers as a sort of an alternative to cabin camping. As these towers were once used to monitor forest fires, their spans of view are spectacular. Girard Ridge Lookout near Mt. Shasta is no exception. Just across the valley to the North is Mt. Shasta, to the west is Castle Crags, and to the east are lush pine forests. While any number of parks and trails are a short drive away, Girard Ridge’s appeal is it’s seclusion. Just being there watching the light change across the mountain’s face is amazing and restorative.
